Herbal Medicine
The practice of herbal medicine uses the same theories as that of acupuncture.
Herbs are usually prescribed as loose dried herbs or powders. Some
are available as tablets. These are known as ‘patent’ herbs. They are more
‘gentle’ and
are often prescribed for symptomatic treatment. Herbs are prescribed
as combinations and a prescription can often contain up to ten different
herbs.
They are categorised with respect to their effect once inside the
body and are prescribed for the individual following TCM diagnosis by the
practitioner.
As Western doctors are not familiar with the properties of
herbs, and as
some herbs prescribed for ‘circulation’ problems can have an
effect similar to aspirin it is advisable to stop taking them for 2-3 weeks
before
planned
surgery.
